Walk Like An Egytpian

Whoa!  I went to the pyramids of Giza!  I went on a crew tour with Maarten, two of the barbershop boys and many of the new cast members and we had an amazing time!  Our tour guide told us that there are 113 pyramids in Egypt and we were able to see three of them.  The three are for each generation of a family (father, son, grandson), but only the man is buried in the pyramid.  There are smaller pyramids built near it for the wife and children.  According to tradition, your pyramid could not be any bigger than your fathers, so each is a little smaller than the next.  Our first stop was a panoramic view of all three where I GOT TO RIDE A CAMEL!  It was a short ride, but definitely worth the $10!

Our second stop brought us to the second pyramid which we were able to walk through.  We had to walk down a tiny, narrow tunnel bent in half (see picture) to the Queen’s Tomb.  This tomb was built to fool tomb raiders into thinking that there was nothing else to steal in the tomb.  We walked up another wicked tiny tunnel to reach the main Pharaoh’s burial chamber.  It was the size of a small two story house and was very hot.

Our final stop was the sphinx.  It has lost its nose and beard over the years, but is still pretty amazing to see.  It was built because one Pharaoh thought that the pyramids should be seen from all directions and there was a huge rock formation in the way, so he commissioned it to be made into a statue.  Pretty neat.

*While at the sphinx a young girl came up to Maarten and asked to have her picture taken with him.  Then she brought all her little sisters and brother into the picture.  Not sure who they thought he was, but I guess I have a famous boyfriend! Haha*

It was an unforgettable day, ending with a beautiful sunset and a gorgeous moon over Alexandria, Egypt.

Today we went through the Seuz Canal.  When I was eating lunch on deck 14 it looked like we were sailing across the sand!  The canal is very small and completely desert all around. Apparently it cost our ship around one million dollars to cross through the Seuz Canal! Yikes.  But good news, it is getting hot outside! I won’t be ready for the Maine snow when I get home.

Happy Halloween from the Solstice!
