Living the History Book

This week I had a revelation.  I am getting to see things in Europe that I have seen my entire life in history books and pictures, but never thought I would ever actually get there...But I HAVE!  I have seen the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, St. Mark's Square, the Colosseum, St. Mark's Basilica and just this cruise I have been to Pompeii, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Florence, the beautiful island of Capri, Corsica and Cassis in Southern France, and the tiny canals of Venice.

Seeing Pompeii was unreal.  I was always fascinated with it in school, especially in Latin class, and being there in person was an out of body feeling.  We saw an outdoor theater, the bathhouse (with the frigidarium), a brothel and the main square with Mt. Vesuvius looming in the distance.  It was amazing to walk those streets where people walked thousands of years ago and then were buried under ground for so many years.  Seeing the plaster casts of the buried bodies made me a little uneasy.  You can see the pain and emotions on their faces so clearly.  It actually gave me goosebumps, but I am so glad that I was able to see it.  Too bad I don't remember any more Latin or I would have fit in there better.  But veni, vidi, vici!

In Venice, I was able to go into Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica.  My mom always talked about Venice and how much she loved it, so being there and seeing everything she saw is a great feeling.  I love all of the little canals in Venice.  We went to the Venice Jazz Club last Tuesday night and got to take a water taxi there and back through these tiny canals.  I felt like I was in 'The Italian Job' (if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it!).

The last amazing day to report on was Florence & Pisa.  I definitely want to go back to Florence for shopping, more sight seeing, etc.  But this time I was able to see the replica of the David statue.  It is a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be.

The Leaning Tower was a lot smaller than I expected it to be!  And it was pouring, but I am so glad that I got there once.  I took the typical picture...Seen below!

On a lighter, happier note...Happy Wedding to Abby and Jared!!!  I am so sad that I wasn't able to be there.  I hope you had the most amazing day and I can't wait to see pictures.  I'm sure it was beautiful!

History Overload

It has been such a long time since my last post and I have done and seen WAY too much for one post.  I think that I am too overwhelmed to fully cover all of the amazing places I saw in the past 12 days, but here are the highlights. I will be back to most of the places I went this week on future cruises, so I will get a chance to tell you about them in better detail then!

This was my first 12 day cruise of the Mediterranean.  Our ports of call were Villefrance, France; Livorno, Italy; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; Naples, Italy; Kotor, Montenegro; Venice, Italy; and Dubrovnik, Croatia, before heading back to Barcelona.  Below are some of the highlights!
Livorno in the rain for my 23rd birthday

The Colosseum , Rome

St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome

St. Peter’s Square, Rome

The most amazing pizza in Napoli, which also happens to be the birthplace of modern-day pizza!

Hannah, Dmytri and I in the entry way into Kotor, Montenegro

View of the inlet from the dock in Kotor

The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy

Our sail away from Venice (Which is actually the one year anniversary of my graduation from college!  I never dreamed that I would be here)

View from the top of a mountain in Dubrovnik, Croatia.  We took a cable car to the top and had a 360 degree view.  I was on top of the world!

More to come...the adventure is just beginning!

Where you going, Barcelona

We officially completed our Trans-Atlantic journey this past Sunday.  We arrived in Barcelona on a beautiful, sunny day!  A wonderful way to arrive in Spain.  A few of us from the cast and AV crew wandered around the city and ended up in the beautiful Parc Guell.  It was designed by Gaudi and is absolutely stunning from top to bottom.  We are back in Barcelona every 12 days, so hopefully I will get to explore the city even more.  Here are a few pictures from our journey this Sunday.

It is also my 23rd birthday today!  We are in Livorno, Italy.  It's raining and chilly, but Itlay is absolutely beautiful.  I am so happy to be doing what I'm doing, with the people I am with.  I am excited to be 23 and see more of the world this year than I ever have before.  Happy May Day!!
